NEW TO THE GAME. HAVE BEEN PLAYING ABOUT SIX MONTHS NOW. AT FIRST I WAS
A CHICKEN FEEDER AT THE TABLE. I HAPPENED ONTO THIS SITE AND WAS VERY INTRIGUED WITH THE PROSPECTS OF DICE CONTROL. STARTED PRACTICING AT HOME ON THE FLOOR WITH A PAIR OF USED SAM’S TOWN DICE. I KNOW THE FLOOR IS NOT THE OPTIMUM PLAYING SURFACE, BUT I HAVE NO
OTHER PLACE YET. I LIVE IN MEMPHIS AND AM ONLY 45 MINUTES AWAY FROM TUNICA.
I HAVE FREQUENTED THE CASINOS A LOT IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM
IS BETTING ON OTHER ROLLERS. I USUALLY
HAVE A LIMITED BANKROLL OR 1 TO 2 HUNDRED TO PLAY ON. THE DICE SET I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING WITH IS THE DIAGONAL.
I HAVE IMPROVED MY GAME CONSIDERABLY SINCE I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING SETTING. I AM NOT WHERE I NEED TO BE, HOWEVER. I KNOW PRACTICE IS WHAT IT TAKES, AND LOTS OF IT. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO TABLE POSITION FOR THE DIAGONAL GRIP AND BETTING METHODS. AM PLANNING TO GO TO TUNICA ON THE MORNING OF THE 11 OF OCTOBER. HELP!!! P.S. DLFISH STANDS FOR DRYLAND FISH. I AM ORIGINALLY FROM WEST TEXAS.

Let me make a couple of suggestions based on your bankroll and experience level.

First, if you haven’t already done so, pick up John Partick’s Advanced Craps book. You can order it on John’s site at www.johnpatrick.com. I think the irishsetter has a link to it on this site.

Second, carefully study everything John says about money management and discipline.

Third, if you’re going to play in Tunica with a $100 – $200 bankroll then you need to be playing at Fitzgeralds. Why? Because it’s the only $3 game over there. And with your bankroll and experience level you should be sticking with a $3 game as much as possible until you master the game.

Fourth, learn to chart (a) tables and (b) shooters. You are looking for a table that is rolling the way you intend to bet. If you are going to bet the do side then you want a table where someone is making points and throwing a lot of sixes and eights. If you’re going to bet the dark side – well, just the opposite. And you’re looking for shooters who are setters or natural rhythmic rollers who are throwing at least eight numbers before sevening out on a consistent basis.

Fifth, consider a hit and down strategy on other shooters, limiting your action on the pass line to when you or one of the qualified shooters at the table has the dice. By hit and down I mean this. Say it’s a qualified shooter. Three bucks on the pass line. Point is established. Bet a $6 six and eight if you don’t have them from the pass line bet. Place odds ($5 or $6 for correct payoff) behind your line bet. If you get a hit on the six or eight you should immediately come down on your place bets. You will have locked up a $7 win – and still have a line bet with odds totaling $8 ot $9 working. At that point you are in fat city – you have a good chance at winning anywhere from $9 to $13 on the pass line bet, depending on the point – yet you only have $1 or $2 at risk because of the prior hit on the six or eight.

Sixth, continue this hit and down strategy until you have increased your bankroll by 50% or so. At that point you can either (a) add another place bet, such as the five or nine, (b) increase the size of your place bet on the six or eight – but not both, or increase the amount of your free odds bet. My personal choice would be (a) – and I would come down on the five or nine after the first hit on any number, but leave the six and eight up for another toss or two.

The main thing to remember here is this – with a limited bankroll you don’t have room for mistakes. Regardless of your setting skills – you absolutely MUST use good money management and discipline practices in order to survive and prosper.

Oh, and lose the ALL CAPS when posting please. Most difficult to read.

Heavy pretty much covered betting and money management. Any grip can be used from any position, the key is to throw the dice in a manner that they strike the wall perpendicularly. (Like a “T”) There has been some discussion on the board about throwing into the corners if you’re not at table’s end, but I have yet to see someone do this successfully in a casino setting. Good luck and keep practicing…

I’m jealous of all you Memphis boys because you have that good old Memphis barbeque I grew up on – that’s pulled pig for the rest of you guys.

Floydada, by the way, is just south of Memphis … Texas. As I recall, it’s the hometown of none other than Bob Wills.

Cue the fiddles.

Cue Tommy Duncan.

Give me a folding chair and a bottle of bond.

I know I have read on this site about qualified shooters, but if you don’t mind, could you explain how to qualify a shooter. Thanks

Yep heavy the Barbecue is so good here that i only eat barbecue within a hundred mile radius of Memphis. I did notice the $3 table open at Fitzgerald’s in the afternoon but it was so crowded I went on down the road. If Fitz had had a $5 table open too, I would have stayed there and played, Yesterday at 3 in the afternoon , I walked into Gold Strike and one crap table was open -no crap players—then counted 9 BJ players , 13 three card poker players , 1 Carribean Stud player , 3 on Let it ride and walked over to the poker room and one table open with 9 players—I wonder what’s going on with Gold Strike to be so empty–Of course next door at Horseshoe it was business as usual–crowded as hell. Heavy I`d rather listen to Bob Dylan and drink a Heinekin—Dylanfreak

DL;
Welcome, you’ve most likely landed on the best site that you could have for the game of Craps.. Not to say that others aren’t good, just that I pick this one for best.
You will find it most helpful I’m sure, in your quest to learn, I would like to point out the very first paragraph on the homepage, right in the middle you will notice a big red word, Research.. Take heed of this word.. There is tons of good help here, and as you will notice no one claims to know everything, so Research it all, and add your own thoughts and knowledge to it.. As no matter what one shoe just doesn’t fit all, it sometimes must be altered just a tiny bit to fit you..
Also don’t be afraid to ask, should you not find your question already answered somewhere.. That is a big part of what makes this site so different, answers and replies will usually abound.. No matter whether your question might be totally new, or well worn out, either the answer or where to find it will pop right up..
Best of luck to you on your quest to learn the game, may it end up fruitful to you..
Oh, kitchen floor dice, well so what, I played Carpet dice..LoLs.. However find yourself some heavy cardboard or plywood n make a practice box of some sort, not only will it help, but it’ll save your back …

Qualified shooter – one who has proven himself with prior performance. I like to see a guy make a pass before I get on the pass line with him. And even then, if he’s a feed-the-chickens kind of shooter I may not get on the line. But I’m looking for a qualified shooter when playing from the do side. On the other hand, if I’m standing at the table and I’ve noticed that the guy straight out on the other end has gone point-seven out the last three times he’s touched the dice then you can bet I’m going to bet the DP when he gets the dice again. So actually, I’m charting shooters and betting both ways, depending on past performance.
